Mod Podge Wood Photo Blocks

I mentioned in my Muffin Tin Monday post this week that I am cuh-razy tired after helping to throw a baby shower this past weekend. Soooo, this week while I am resting up a little and prepping for my two kidlets for their first day of school, I thought I would share with you, all of the super fun decorations ( I even have a craft fail to share!) and a few gratuitous shots of the baby (who was born early!).
First up is a set of Wood Photo Blocks I made for the baby.
Aren't just the sweetest thing! We doubled some of the baby shower decor to work as nursery decor and I just love how they came out!
I cut photos and scrapbook paper to 3 1/2 inches to match the blocks. I worked one square and one cube at a time, brushing on the mod podge, adhering the photo and then another coat of mod podge. Before the top coat of mod podge I cut out some lettering and adhered it to the blocks, spelling out baby's name.
Here's a shot of the photo sides (there were two photos on each block)
Here's the opposite side from the photo. The nursery theme is polka dots.
Later, when the baby is older and not prone to sticking things in her mouth, she can play with them. But, for now, they will sit happily on a shelf in the nursery.
Other moms inspired this idea! Please check out Personalized Color Blocks by Chasing Cheerios and Photo Cubes by Make and Takes for more crafting with blocks!
This post is also part of This is the Year's Mod Podge Mania
Oh! and yes, Mom...I will be making these for Baby Ro too!

Muffin Tin Monday - Circus Theme!

Let's hear it for the BIG TOP! Instead of goign through all the weekly mumbo jumbo about what muffin tin monday is, for the "newbies" or lurkers, I'll just refer to you other Muffin Tin Mondays and the Muffin Tin Monday FAQ.

This week's MTM theme is CIRCUS! I was a bit worn out from the baby shower I threw this weekend, and could...not...think...for the life of me, what I was going to do. I didn't have any ideas for circus-themed foods.

Not one. Nada. Zilch. Zero. Been there?

So I played up the "big top" aspect and here is what we did for Muffin Tin Monday. We chose to have a simple snack literally "Under The Big Top".

"What's Under the Big Top for my little animals?"

"Why, it's a "three ring circus of snacks"!

Yipee!

(I know you all will love me in spite of my sucky photos. ugh. They are so dark!)

What did you do for Muffin Tin Monday? Did you make it a Circus Theme? Share it with us by adding the URL to your blog post or flickr photo!

No Need For The Sunday Paper

It's that time again, when every Sunday, I bring my weekly "link love" and share with you what I like to call "No Need For The Sunday Paper." Because, really...Who needs The Paper when you have so many wonderful links around the blogosphere! If you ever want to be featured, shoot me an email with your link and I'll be sure to check it out!

Fun With Mama: This blogger has some seriously great ideas! She's an Amercian Stay-at-home-mom living in South Africa. She does all sorts of super fun activities with her kids. One of which is her recipe for DIY Puffy Paint. And she put the paints in condiment squeeze bottles. Go have a look-see! She says she has seen this idea around other blogs. have you done a DIY puffy paint project? If so, leave a comment with a link. I would love to see it!

Scribbit: Story Dice. Little wooden blocks painted with everything from animals to methods of transportation. Roll the "dice" and make up a story based on what landed face up. So.....so...so...cute. And leave it to Michelle to execute this idea with simplicity and style!

The R Family Diaries: Her take on that ever evolving topic of Blogging For Dollars. She hits the nail on the proverbial head and I definitely think it is a "must read." Tiffany is one half of the brains behind the amazing blogger comment support site: The Secret is in the Sauce (afectionately known as SITS).

Speaking of SITS...There is still time to cast your vote for my entry in the Whrrl-sponspred contest for a ticket to SITScation! Be sure to click "I like it". Scripture For Sunday
Here is the kids Bible Verse for this month from church. My Son keeps saying it over and over. Maybe I should do that too.
The Lord is my helper.

The Lord is my helper...The Lord is my helper. The Lord is my helper. The Lord is my helper...
There is so much we can lern from our children.

Boo Boo Hack: Use An Old Sock And Gauze

Last night, there was a bit of a fall in the garage and my son scraped up his elbow pretty bad. I had a crying child and I was trying to get dinner on the table... I scoured the medicine cabinet, but I didn't have the right sized band-aid for his large boo-boo, so I remembered what my mother-in-law shared with me last winter. Cut off the top of an old sock (kid-sized). Set aside (I try to keep one with my first aid stuff just in case). Apply neosporin to a gauze pad or length of gauze, wrap it around the wound, and slide the cut off piece of sock up over the wrapped wound. The stretchy elastic top of the sock helps keep the gauze in place! No sticky medical tape and the gauze is the perfect size for larger boo-boos! Hint: this works for grown up boo-boos too!

(another related hack: if the gauze is sticking to the wound for any reason, apply more neosporin over the gauze and rewrap it and wait awhile for it to absorb into gauze. unwrap and peel away !)

On My Crafty "To-Do" List: Funky Felt Crafts

I am so very busy right now, but in all the craziness... I want to set aside some time to make some sweet treats out of this Funky Felt Crafts book I recieved from my mom! And it's made by American Girl! It's actually geared towards young girls, but the projects are so cute and perfect for all ages really!

They have in depth instructions for felt "newbies".

They have a "patterns" section in the back...

I am sooooo making these adorable birdies! Aren't they cute?

And these rockin' hair clippies seem doable too!

It'll be a few more days until I can take some good 'ol crafting time out, but I can drool over this book in the meantime. Thanks Mom!

Sometimes...I need to be reminded of who's got my back...
Psalm 23
A psalm of David
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,
He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

Thoughts on Mommyhood: An Open Letter To My Sister

Dear Sis,

I cannot believe your due date is almost here! It seems like almost yesterday we were two high school girls belting out The Bodygaurd Soundtrack as we got ourselves ready in the bathroom every morning!

You are about to embark on the incredible journey of motherhood and I just wanted to take a moment and encourage you, lift you up, and tell you what a wonderful mother I think are. I know you haven't actually given birth yet-but you are a mother already, whether the baby is in your tummy or out of it. I guess that sounds a little strange.

God has given you so many gifts and talents, each one of them uniquely designed to meet the needs of your baby. You are your baby's mommy for a reason! Another one that sounds strange, but is so true!

I don't want to waste my words on cliche statements like "Treasure these moments, they won't last forever" or "Someday you'll miss this stage." Except... Well... they're cliche for a reason. When you have your baby, a part of you will miss being pregnant, and when your child is two, you will miss their newborn stage, and when they start school, you will think "How did five years just pass in the blink of an eye?" I don't understand it. I just know it happens. And I am sure when we are older we will both recall how our twenty somethings used to be in diapers!

I guess I also want to pass on a few tidbits of "lessons learned" from the last five years. I am no sage and I am still learning and growing as a mom. Every. Single. Day. However, even in my "early years" of parenting, I have learned a few key lessons.

1. You can't go it alone. I don't mean you can't be a single mom. You can. Although I hope you never have to journey down that road. What I mean is, you can't do it without God. That's another one of those statements that sound cliche and I have heard it a thousand times before. But, darn it, if it isn't true! God is not burdened by the weight of our struggles. He's God. I tried it with out leaning on God, it's a lot harder that way.

2. There is no one "right way" to parent. It seems like, with how difficult parenting can be, God would have written a universal manual for us! There are so many different "schools of thought" out there and and many a parent that will tell you, "This is the best way." It's simply not true. It may be the best way for them, and they may have had success with a certain parenting technique that you may want to adopt (and then it will become the best way for you too!) but that doesn't mean it's the only way. There are lots of ways to get your baby to fall asleep. There are many different ways to potty train a child. You are not less of a mom if you don't breastfeed, working moms vs. stay-at-home moms, to schedule or not schedule...It's up to you (and Jake). Try out the things you think will work for your family and if they don't succeed, try something else.

3. Some days are better than others. You'll have good days and not-so-good days. Mom used to tell me "This too, shall pass." And it always made me feel better. Something I have learned is that while not everyday is a trip to Disneyland, everyday has merit and value.

4. Connect with other moms. Share your experiences, joys and struggles with other who are going through the same thing. Mom groups, church, relatives (wink, wink). Even strangers. I had one of the most encouraging talks with a mom I met for the first time at one of the play places here in town. I will never forget it. Try online. I have found an amazing group of women to connect with, right here, through blogging.

5. When it comes to you babies health, trust your instincts. They call it the "maternal instinct" for a reason. If something doesn't seem right, follow your gut. In my opinion, it's always better to be safe than sorry. And remember, you are your daughter's best advocate!

6. Be ready to eat your words. I can't tell you how many times, before I had kids, I would say to myself "I am not going to do that, when I have kids." I was so sure of myself...And then I had two kids. And I realized a few things weren't as devastatingly important as I once thought they were.

7. I will always be here for you. Seriously. I mean it. Call me whenever. Even 3am. I am available to listen.

8. Date Night, Date Night, Date Night. Caring for a child, there is not always time for one on one time with our spouses. Make the time, even when it seems impossible. Date nights have helped Trevor and I take an uninterupted "time out" for one another.

9. It's okay if you don't know stuff. I didn't know how to change diapers or care for a newborn before I had kids. In fact, I was rather afraid of newborns! I had to learn "on the job" and I just figured it out as I went along!

Have I overwhelmed you? I hope not! I love you so much and can't wait to meet my niece!

Love, Me

Muffin Tin Monday

Muffin Tin Monday is a weekly blog carnival (held here at Her Cup Overfloweth), where we post about a Muffin Tin Meal we made for our kid(s). Sometimes there is a theme. Sometimes, there isn't (see my sidebar for dates and themes). What's a Muffin Tin Meal, you ask? It's pretty simple: a meal (most often for kids) in a muffin tin! And just to be clear: There is no wrong way to make a muffin tin meal. If you want to know a little more, be sure to check out the Muffin Tin Monday FAQ.
There is no theme this week! Here's what we did:

I have started using the 12 cup muffin tin lately for muffin tin meals. The kids don't mind sharing a tin together (go figure). I used the flower cups and designated a color for each kidlet. We had:

orange slices, banana slces on party picks, carrot sticks, sun chips, choc. chips, star shaped cheese slices, turkey on party picks.

The small portions and wide variety made this meal in a muffin tin a huge hit. Everything was gone!

Did you make a Muffin Tin Meal this week? Won't you share it with us? Be sure to include the URL of the blog post or photo in the form below!

Scripture For Sunday

Romans 3:9-20

9What shall we conclude then? Are we any better? Not at all! We have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under sin. 10As it is written:

"There is no one righteous, not even one;
11there is no one who understands,
no one who seeks God.
12All have turned away,
they have together become worthless;
there is no one who does good,
not even one." 13"Their throats are open graves;
their tongues practice deceit."
"The poison of vipers is on their lips."
14"Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness."
15"Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16ruin and misery mark their ways, 17and the way of peace they do not know."
18"There is no fear of God before their eyes."

19Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. 20Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.

Things I Googled This Week Vol.3

Photo by Tina Keller. (this is not my dd)

It seems like many of you have enjoyed my "Things I Googled This Week" posts, so I thought I would keep the ball rolling and see where it goes!

This week I googled a few more random things. In no particular order (other than that which I remember), here they are:

1. When is the appropriate time for children to stop taking naps? It was a long one to google and I didn't find what I was looking for... I think I may need to change the search.

2. Victoria Price. It's all about iCarly's iFight Shelby Marx in this household (my little miss can't get enough, and wants to replay it on Tivo everyday!) and I wanted the lowdown on the guest star. Just because.

3. San Rafael, CA. Coach is up for a job at a local Jr. High in this beautiful City. I went with him to the interview more than seven hours away and I fell in love with this area of California! We drove over one of the bay bridges and I was not used to the double decker concept! It was pretty fun and the people there are incredibly friendly!

4. SNL Spoof Maraca. If you have never seen this spoof and your child watches Dora the Explorer, you will probably laugh hysterically (like I did). I was just telling someone about it this week, and it's still funny every time I see it - Maraca's sidekick is named "mittens". (update: there is one portion, near the end that is not family friendly. :/

5. Muffin Tin Monday - I know, I know. Googling my own blog carnival seems weird. I guess I just wanted to see what popped up!

Friday Find: Dollar Store Barbie iDesign Cards

Let's face it, the toys at the dollar store are usually junk. They break within 30 seconds of purchase (I have had this happen in the parking lot on the way to the car!). But, that's why you buy them-they're cheap and if it breaks-you haven't sacrificed too much for those 30 seconds of bliss for your child. They have a few diamonds in the rough if you know where and how to look.

On the hunt through the local Dollar Tree a few weeks ago, My sweet Little Miss happened upon these Barbie iDesign Cards. They are so great! There in the store I reverted back to a little girl-almost as excited as she was for this simple purchase! Let me break it down for you (I'll try to contain my excitement!).

It comes with a pack of cars and a little display case.

We purchased an extra pack of cards (they had those too). They come with a background, a Barbie (Barbie, Summer, or Teresa), Clothes, and various accessory cards.

You then layer them together to create your super cool display! You can interchange backgrounds, clothes and accessories and give each girl a new look!

My daughter loves them and they are the perfect quiet toy for the doctors office, restaurant, or whenever! And they only cost a dollar! woo-hoo!

Baby Shower Invitation

I have been working on these for the last few days and I am so proud of how they turned out!

I used my circle punch, cricut alphalicious font, paper flowers, and adhesive gems. Once I had the design down, it was just a matter of assembly (that took a little time - there were 30 invites!).

I would show you the inside, but there is a bit too much personal info in there. ;)

Group Art: Painting With Toilet Brushes!

Working together to create art can be not only be fun, but a great way to promote cooperation, and to encourage the process of art, not just the product! We gathered the supplies... the paint, the paper, the new toilet brushs (from the dollar store)!

We got ready to paint...

And before you knew it, we were stamping away! The kids were having so much fun! They enjoyed using the toilet brushes (who would have thought?) to paint! And then...

Things got a little messier. Thekids began wiping away all their pretty stamping to make this mish mash of color....I was feeling a little uneasy, how far were they going to take it?

Well, they covered their entire "canvas" with the paint (which went from red and blue to some sort of purple/pink mixture!)

Look how happy the kidlets are with thier artistry!

I had a feeling that this might happen! So, we decided to revisit the stamping to technique and add white "stars" to the purple and pink. My little miss even said "oh, mommy the stars are so pretty" & little dude said "there's so many of dem".

What fun we had working together to create this work of art! It's now hanging in their bedroom!

Who would have thought that two new toilet brushes and some paint could have provided such fun!

Muffin Tin Monday - Theme: Planes, Trains, Automobiles

This week's theme for Muffin Tin Monday is Planes, Trains, and Automobiles...It was a tough one for me, I will have to admit. I kind of pulled something out of thin air in hopes the kidlets would like it! If you are new here, let me fill you in a little...
Muffin Tin Monday is a weekly blog carnival (held here at Her Cup Overfloweth), where we post about a Muffin Tin Meal we made for our kid(s). Sometimes there is a theme. Sometimes, there isn't (see my sidebar). What's a Muffin Tin Meal, you ask? It's simple: a meal in a muffin tin! And my motto is: You can be a basic or as detailed as you want! In other words, there is no wrong way to make a muffin tin meal. If you want to know a little more, be sure to check out the Muffin Tin Monday FAQ.
Muffin TIn Monday participation has doubled in the last month! Woo-hoo! I am so thrilled that so many of you have joined us! We had so many of you join us for the first time last week! Thank you for participating and welcome! Because of our jump in size, I won't be able to get to everyone every week, but I will try super hard!
So here's what we did:

We went with racecars today! I drew a "racetrack" around the tin. It was a HUGE hit! Here's waht we enjoyed:
~ Cheese "wheels"
~Licorice "stick shifts"
~Milk "fuel"
~ Apple "steering wheels"
~Chicken -for y'know when cars "play chicken"
~Cherries - as in "this racecar is so "cherry", or for the kind you hang on your rearview mirror!
Lightning McQueen and Doc decided to join us for lunch... They weren't that hungry...

How are you enjoying our new Muffin Tin Monday Button made by Coffee Graphic Design? I'm loving it! If you want one, go ahead and grab it from my sidebar!

Things I Googled This Week Vol.3

So, I had to share with you all the crazy things I googles this week! It's been a wild week, full of high drama around here. Here's what landed on my google search page during all the chaos!

1. Social Security For Illegal Aliens Scam- do email hoaxes know no shame? We recieved an email about this, so I had to look it up on snopes.com of course. If you ever think an email might be a hoax or a scam-check out snopes first!

2. Brown Hairy Spider - my brother-in-law found a golf ball sized brown hairy spider in our garage....eeeewwwww! I was pretty scared! I checked online to see if I could find out what kind it was- no dice (aparently there are a lot of brown hairy spiders in this world!)

3. wilton cake supplies - looking for stuff for muffin tin monday!

4. blogworld conference - I guess there are a lot of blogging conferences out there! I thought I knew about them all. Blogworld is a conference that brings people together across all forms of media (although I don't think I would ever say I was in "media"-I'm just a mom-like you!)

5. craft rooms (google image search) - drool. wipe drool. drool again.

Preschool Art: Marble Painting

Marble Painting is a super simple and fun way to create a wonderful piece of art! They are great just by themselves, or you can trace a shape onto to the paper before you add the marbles and paint(as seen below). Later when it's dry, you can cut out you shape!

To make your own marble painting masterpice, you'll need a few supplies:
~open, (preferably shallow) carboard box
~marbles
~tempra paint (washable if possible)
~paper to paint on (able to fit in box)
~small yogurt container for paint and marbles (see below)
~spoons (plastic or otherwise)
(It's always a good idea to gather your supplies before you begin!)
How to:
Place your paper inside the box...

Gather you yogurt (or other small containers) add the marbles and paint.

Swirl the marble around in the paint. Spoon out your paint covered marble onto the paper in the box.
Tilt the carboard box from side to side and watch as the marble leaves "tracks" and create beautiful strokes of paint!

Ta-da! A wonderful work of art! My kids didn't want me to cut out their paper, so we left it "as is"-which is pretty great too!

Happy Painting!
